2|2| FREEDLYVILLE - DAYLIGHT SAVINGS - DORSET, VT [3.8.15]
Daylight savings marked our second venture into
Freedlyville, and the largest turnout for Cave Music yet. On the morning of
March 8th we skated our collective ways over winding snow-dusted tar to the
trail head at Dorset. After explaining ourselves to a few curious locals on
snowmobiles, we hit the public highway up to the quarry, with loosely packed
snow crunching under foot. The sky was overcast, and flakes whirled around in the
30 degree air as we reached the wide southeastern entrance to the mountain of
marble carved out a century before. The tones of a dissonant orchestra pit rose
up inside as 15 or so folks in
attendance set camp at various slabs of stone and ice to tune their
instruments. We opened shop with a howling mess of whirling plastic sound tubes
and closed with a Merle Travis favorite.
The middle yielding a wild lovely range of acoustic folk tunes, magnetic
tape loops, amplified electric cello noise, experimental soundscapes, atonal accordion
dirges, and a ritual dance of bells in smoke. Gathering up the instrumental
spreads, we huffed back down the hill, clouds of ice shimmering in some of the first
and warmest rays of sun that year.

Over the summer of 2014, along with some folks and friends from down in that big stack of bricks known as Manhattan, I shot two videos (below) for their psychedelic glam rock band Smile Swamp Princess. While this wasn't related to Cave Music specifically, it shared the venue for CM|2|1, so I figured it might be enlightening to include those projects here to give a better idea of that space. Hopefully one day I'll be able to shoot some video at one of these Cave Music events, but as I usually participate as well it's hard enough to come by a good set of photos. Oh hey, if you're a videographer, please come along on an expedition, and BECOME A MEMBER, eh?
